The press is meant to be the guardian of truth, hold those in power to account, and empower democracy by informing the citizens who participate in it. That’s why the press is often referred to as the fourth branch of government, or the fourth estate.
A free press is an essential component of any self-governing society. As citizens, we need to know what decisions our representatives are making. We need to know how they’re allocating our tax dollars. And we need to know if they’re representing OUR interests, as supposed to their own.
