Why we Should Buy Sustainable Clothing for our Kids

As mothers, we have an instinctive drive to protect and care for our children. We want to provide them with a world that is kind and sustainable, both for their present well-being and for the future they will inherit. We do our best to provide them with healthy food, a good education, and physical activities. But what about the clothes they wear? Sustainable clothing is earth conscious, lasting, and promotes both their health and the health of our planet. And with more and more brands making efforts to adopt sustainable business models, it's getting easier to make the switch.

Sustainability: A Pathway to Planet-Friendly Fashion

When we choose sustainable clothing for our children, we actively participate in reducing our ecological footprint. Sustainable clothing brands adopt environmentally responsible practices such as using organic or recycled materials, minimizing water usage and carbon emissions. Sustainable brands also provide eco-friendly packaging and commit to fair labor practices with their employees and suppliers worldwide. By investing in these brands, we are supporting this business model and signaling to other brands that's it's a profitable business decision.

Earth Consciousness for Future Generations

Teaching our children about sustainability begins with the choices we make in their wardrobe. By choosing sustainable clothing, we instill in them a sense of responsibility towards the environment. As they grow and witness our commitment firsthand, they learn the importance of reducing waste, reusing, and recycling. We are setting an example for them, paving the way for a future where earth consciousness becomes the norm.

Lasting Quality: A Testament to Thoughtful Design

Sustainable clothing brands are built on the ethos of durability. Their garments are meticulously crafted to withstand the test of time, ensuring that they can be handed down from one child to another. With their inherent durability, sustainable clothes provide excellent value for money and eliminate the need for excessive consumption. Investing in fewer, but longer-lasting pieces not only saves our pockets but also helps combat the throwaway culture that plagues modern fashion.

Promoting Optimal Health

The health and well-being of our children are paramount concerns for every mother. Sustainable clothing comes to the rescue, offering a range of benefits that prioritize their delicate skin and overall health. Unlike traditional clothing made with synthetic materials, sustainable garments are often crafted from organic fibers, reducing exposure to harmful chemicals and potential allergens. In addition, they promote breathability, allowing sweat and moisture to evaporate naturally, keeping our little ones dry and comfortable.

From utilizing scrap materials that would normally be waste to personally selects each factory that they work with to ensure fair labor practices, sustainability factors into every aspect of Mon Coeur’s business model.

How to Identify a Sustainable Business

1. Look for certifications: Sustainable businesses often have certifications such as GOTS, which meets the standards for organic fibres, or Fair Trade, which assure that they meet certain ethical and environmental standards. A Certified B Corporation means that it has been recognised as a corporation that is playing its part in driving positive change towards a more sustainable economy. Here is a fuller list of ethical fashion certifications.

2. Research their materials: Sustainable brands prioritize using organic and recycled materials, and provide transparency about their sourcing processes. Check their websites for information on where they source their materials and how they minimize waste.

3. Transparency: Sustainable businesses are open about their practices and are willing to answer questions from customers. Look for brands that feature a section about their supply chain and production processes on their website

Discussing sustainable business practices with MonCoeur Founder, Louise Ulukaya, at an event in Los Angeles.

One of my favorite sustainable childrens brands is Mon Coeur. I had the pleasure of meeting their founder, Louise Ulukaya, who told me about how sustainability factors into every aspect of her business - from utilizing scrap materials that would normally be waste to personally selecting each factory that they work with to ensure fair labor practices. They have pledged 1% of sales For the Planet and they even have a program where you can send in used childrens clothes to be recycled. Their entire mission and business practices are laid out on their website.
