Before the before

Our Mid-Century Restoration Project, Palmera House, by Palm Springs architect William Krisel, 1962. The original photos by the one and only, Julius Shulman and current photos by Derek. The house has been neglected and needs a lot of love but we’re here for it.

Things I’ve Learned Renovating My First House

  1. Find someone you trust who speaks “construction” to help you manage the project

  2. Tell them everything you want, have them help you write an SOW (scope of work) and have THEM (not you) walk the contractor through it

  3. Aim High! Start with everything you want, then knock things off from there depending on budget

  4. Get multiple bids

  5. Stay on top of the project. Visit the site twice daily (am & pm) to make sure everyone else is on top of it too.

  6. Pinterest is your best friend. Find what you like and then use that as your reference. Don’t be a hero.

  7. Pools are expensive

  8. If working in the summer, ask your contractor to turn the thermostat up when the team goes home each night

  9. Install the stair railing last. You will be so grateful you don’t have one when you are bringing in furniture.
