What Is Happening in Artsakh/Nagorno-Karabakh?
On September 27, fighting broke out in Artsakh/Nagorno-Karabakh, a disputed region on the border of Armenia and Azerbaijan, when Azerbaijan launched its largest defensive in a generation to retake the land. The region is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, but the large majority of the population is ethnically Armenian and has been under the control of Armenian forces since the end of a separatist war in 1994. There have been an estimated 1000 casualties since the fighting began. On Monday night (Nov 9, 2020)a ceasefire was brokered by Moscow. Russian peacekeepers were deployed to the region, sparking celebrations in Azerbaijan and protests in Armenia. Now, this conflict is complex. It stems from a long and contentious history and involves multiple perspectives and geopolitical power players, Russia, and Turkey. I spoke about all of this with my friends and colleague Mashinka. Mashinka was born in Yerevan, Armenia and she emmigrated to the U S in the early nineties, when the Soviet union collapse ignited major upheaval in the region. Most reporting will refer to this as a territorial dispute, but the historical context and the personal stories in this conversation shine a light on why it is so much more to so many.
